This workshop is designed as the first of a 4-part series on understanding glazes and glaze application.

Class is limited to 10 participants.  Salvaterra Pottery and Woodworks will be offering part 1 of a four-part Hands On Glaze Workshop. Part 1 will include application techniques, mixing dry glazes, how to use a talisman sieve and use a hydrometer, and learn to make your own glazes following a formula (from John Britt’s, Gabriel Kline’s, and Hesselberth and Roy’s books) with a partner.

The Part 1 workshop is scheduled for Saturday April 13 (8:30 AM to 4 PM) and Saturday April 20 from Noon to 3 PM.

Saturday April 13
AM
8:30 – 9:00 – Coffee and introductions
9:00 – Overview of Glaze Chemistry (the fun and painless version:) and using a Glaze
notebook. 10:00 – Break
10:15 – Hands on: Understanding and Making Appropriate Test Tiles/Pots
11:00 – Hands on: Commercial Glazes – the good and the bad (application techniques) PM
12:00 – 12:30- PM Bag Lunch
12:30 – 1:30 – Hands on: The process of mixing a glaze from commercial dry,
premixed glazes 1:30 Break
1:45 – 4:00 Hands on: (In Groups of 2) Mixing your own test glazes with glaze chemicals by reading a formula (formulas from John Britt’s, Gabriel Kline’s, and Hesselberth and Roy’s glaze books), apply the glaze you make on test tiles, finish glazing your own bisque pots and loading the kiln.
Saturday April 20
9:00 am – 11:00 AM
Examination of test tiles and your own pots with summary notes and discussion. Including glaze faults
Things to bring:
• Sketchbook and Pencil or erasable pen – (plus some colored pencils if desired)
• A highlighter
• A 1 inch 3-ring binder
• A calculator (you can use one on your phone)
• 4-6 cone 6 small vase or tumbler bisque pots if desired (Pots must be made with either Highwater Clay’s “Brownstone” or “Little Loafers” ONLY). Test tiles will be included.
• 2 Fan Brushes
• A small (1 gallon) bucket
• Two small towels
• Apron
• Shoes that can get dirty 🙂
• A Bag Lunch/Drinks
• N-95, KN95 Mask or Respirator Mask with filters if desired (we will have surgical
masks)
Please do not bring any of your own glazing items (tongs, measuring cups, etc.) except for the 2 Fan Brushes. All other items will be provided.
